It is my pleasure to present this newsletter, highlighting key activities, achievements, and developments at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) between January to March 2026.

This edition features notable research progress, including the release of MakSoy 7N, a high-yielding, disease-resistant soybean variety developed at Makere University. This innovation is expected to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen the soybean value chain, and improve farmers livelihoods across Uganda. The Resilient Urban Food Systems (RUFS) Project continues to empower farmers in Mbale City and Kasese Municipality through climate-smart agronomic practices and sustainable production techniques. Similarly, the CPUg Project is enhancing institutional and community capacity in integrated fecal sludge and solid waste management, contributing to safer and more sustainable urban environments. The Agricultural Policy Research Centre (APRC) remains a leader in agricultural policy research and dialogue. On 4th March 2026, the Centre convened a high-level policy dialogue on strengthening Ugandas agricultural trade competitiveness within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework. In addition, the TORCH Project, implemented with regional partners such as Busitema University, highlights the value of university-community partnerships in advancing clean energy solutions and climate action.

Our commitment to competence-based education is reflected I impactful research, innovation, and community engagement. A notable example is the collaboration between the CAES researchers and students of Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, Namugongo, who converted organic market waste into eco-friendly soap using Black Soldier Fly technology. This initiative demonstrates how practical learning fosters creativity, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship. Additionally, Capacity-building initiatives such as the climate change reporting short course supported by the British High Commission and our students strong performance in Uganda Wildlife Authority conservation competitions highlight the Colleges growing role in environmental stewardship. We also celebrate the graduation of 561 Makerere University students, with special recognition to Ms. Esther Ziribaggwa, the top-performing science student, whose excellence continues to inspire the academic community.

These achievements reaffirm our commitment to a dynamic, research-led institution focused on innovation, community engagement, and a resilient, food- secure future.
