In a bid to enable students settle in well, Colleges, Schools and Departments organize orientations for all newly admitted students, both undergraduate and graduate.
On 2nd February 2022, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) held an orientation for all First Year students, where academic and administrative leaders headed by the Principal, Prof. Bernard Bashaasha briefed students about the College and the University in general.
In his remarks, the Principal welcomed and appreciated the students for having chosen to study at CAES. He informed students that they had made the right choice since CAES is one of the best Colleges at the University with numerous projects and good infrastructure to effectively ground them in their fields of study. He cautioned the students against fraudsters who target unsuspecting newly admitted students.
Addressing the students, the Deputy Principal, Dr Gorettie N. Nabanoga warned them against wasting time running around to change programme, saying all courses can lead to success.
In similar regard, the Dean, School of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bio-Engineering, Dr Abel Atukwase; the representative of the Dean School of Agricultural Sciences, Prof. Nelson Turyahabwe; and the representative of the Dean School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Dr Justine Namalwa; briefed students on the programmes in their respective units. In her remarks, Dr Namalwa cautioned students to desist temptation and concentrate on their studies. “We do not want to see any of you leaving University as a parent. You came here as someone’s child and you should therefore leave as a child not a parent,” she advised. The meeting was also attended by the College and School registrars led by Ms. Jofrina Kyohairwe who sensitized the students on various academic policies regarding registration, tuition payment, withdrawal from a programme, change of programme, examinations and irregularities.
During the meeting, Mr. Albert Muhumuza, Systems Administrator CAES briefed students on the various ICT services at the College and the portals for online registration, generation of reference numbers for fees payment, creation of university email and access to MUELE – the Makerere University E-Learning platform.

Students’ mental welfare
The Manager, Counseling and Guidance Centre at Makerere University, Mr. Henry Nsubuga shared experiences of the various challenges faced by students and provided guidance on stress management. He also informed the students about the University Sexual Harassment Policy and how to deal with the challenge. “The Counselling and Guidance Centre does not only deal with challenges. We also guide students on growth opportunities and work on the holistic development of students. Utilize the centre as much as possible to support your mental wellbeing for the time you will spend at the University,” he advised.
Sensitization on the importance of good values
The Executive Director, Family Life Network also coordinator of the “Becoming a New Generation (BANG) Project at Makerere University, Mr. Steven Langa sensitized students about the importance of good values, noting that academics contributes only 15% towards someone’s success. “Success largely depends on values. This is why we initiated the BANG project to instill good values in University students,” he noted.
