The Coordinator of the Climate Smart and NORHED II projects at the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES), Makerere University invites you all to the aforementioned lectures scheduled for Friday 11th March 2022 from 10:00am-12:00pm in the School of Agricultural Scinces Conference Hall.

Presentations

  1. How climate smart is conservation agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa? – Vegard Martinsen, a researcher at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences
  2. The potential of biochar as a soil enhancer in crop production – Dr Alfred Obia, a Lecturer at the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, Gulu University
  3. Testing the pigeon pea – biochar – maize value chain – Jan Mulder, Professor of Soil Science at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing
  4. Biochar: From waste to pollution sorbent – Gerard Cornelissen, a technical expert at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and a Professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

Brief on the projects

The Norwegian Research Council and NORAD awarded two 5-year capacity-building projects to the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The two projects are; “Climate-smart Innovations in Agriculture in Uganda: Improved food security, livelihoods, and soil carbon” (ClimSmart), and the “Climate Smart Agriculture in Uganda” (NORHED II). Both ClimSmart and NORHED II are implemented by three institutions including Makerere University College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), Gulu University, and Rural Enterprise Development Solutions (REDS). The overall objective of the ClimSmart project is to contribute to increased food security, on-farm profitability, and entrepreneurship in communities of smallholder farms in Uganda, thus improving livelihoods through training and implementation of novel climate-smart practices in Agriculture. The overall objective of the NORHED II project is to generate and share new knowledge and to contribute to capacity building with respect to food security and on-farm profitability in Sub-Saharan Africa through innovative and sustainable climate-smart technologies.

The project sites are in Alebtong and Mubende districts representing two distinct agro-ecological zones. Broad activities under the projects´ objectives include setting up, running, and monitoring controlled field experiments and pot experiments; setting up randomized control trials and conducting surveys; training farmers on CSA technologies; collecting and analyzing data for all experiments, and knowledge generation and knowledge transfer, among others.

In line with the above activities, a team from Norway on the NORHED II and ClimSmart projects are in Uganda from 2nd-11th March to participate in the project activities.
