The European Union through its Programme “Development Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture” (DESIRA) is supporting a consortium of International and National research organisations which include:- The French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE)-Kenya, The Institute of Research For Development (IRD)-France, Makerere University (MaK)-Uganda, The National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI) and National Forestry Resources Research Institute (NaFORRI) both of the National Agricultural Research Organisation Uganda (NARO), Wagingen University and Research, Dipartmento di Agronomia Animali ALimenti Risorse naturali e ambiente (DAFNAE), Strand Life Sciences Private Limited India (strand), International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA -Uganda), and the Uganda Coffee Farmers Alliance Limited (UCFA) to implement a research project “Robusta Coffee Agroforestry to Adapt and Mitigate Climate Change in Uganda (ROBUST)” with CIRAD as lead institution

The overall objective of ROBUST is to support sustainable economic development of Uganda by promoting and improving the Robusta coffee agroforestry farming system. At Makerere University, the DESIRA/ROBUST project is hosted by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences which is mandated to oversee the training component. As a capacity building endeavor for project and non-project stakeholders, the consortium has developed a training course module entitled Coffee improvement, production, and protection targeting diploma/degree holders in coffee research, extension and practice. The course will leverage the diverse expertise of the ROBUST project team to interactively deliver the topics below:

Topic 1: Coffee agronomy and ecological requirements
Topic 2: Coffee genetics, origin and germplasm; and variety improvement Topic 3: Coffee pests: identification and economic importance
Topic 4: Coffee diseases; identification and economic importance
Topic 5: Mechanistic approaches for modelling Pests and Diseases dynamics Topic 6: Agroforestry for management of coffee pests and diseases
Topic 7: Habitat management for management for coffee pests and diseases Topic 8: Soil management as a tool in coffee pest and disease management Topic 9: Functional landscape approach for Pests and Diseases management

Topic 10: Host plant resistance in coffee
Topic 11: Biological control of coffee pests and diseases
Topic 12: Pesticides for use in coffee production – biopesticides, biorationals, semiochemicals, chemical pesticides
Topic 13: IPM considerations and principles
Topic 14: Integrating coffee sector stakeholders in the process of research
Module 15: Statistics, data management and R software

Course Particulars
Target audience: Post graduate students, researchers, extension agents and practioners in the

coffee sector.
Mode of course delivery: Physical (face-to-face) with theory and practical sessions Language course will be delivered: English
Course duration: The course will run for 5 days from the 10th – 15 June 2024. Venue: Makerere University (Food Science and Technology conference hall) Registration Fee: 60,000/= (17 USD)
