Advancing Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains through Strengthening Transdisciplinary Skills and Cooperation in East African Doctoral Education – ‘ADVALUE’

The project addresses the need for qualified doctorates and future academic professionals in agricultural sciences who impact the research and teaching capacities of their Higher Education Institutions and contribute to local and regional achievement of SDG goals with the development of sustainable agricultural value chains. Details

Objectives of ADVALUE

  1. modernised doctoral programmes with innovative course offers in transdisciplinary research methods and value chain approaches,

  2. strengthened stakeholder involvement to ensure needs orientation and innovation potential,

  3. capacity building of staff and students, and

  4. improved quality assurance and development in doctoral education.

AfPEC Project

*****Funded by DANIDA, Agroforestry for People, Ecosystems and Climate Change (AfPEC), a five-year project (March 2024-April 2029) focusing on Mt. Elgon Highlands in Eastern Uganda aims to foster to use agroforestry to prevent climate change and loss of biodiversity in the region. The project will focus on four districts namely: Mbale, Bududa, Bulambuli, and Kapchorwa. Project Partners: Makerere University, Aarhus University & University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Youth Leading Environmental Change (YLEC), Seniors without Borders, Forests of the World, Stjernekommunikation, and Frellsen Kaffe. Through the project, coffee farmers in the region will be supported to export their coffee to Denmark. The project team held the inception meeting on 25th-26th September 2024, in Mbale City. More

Gender-Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT)

GREAT) is a five-year collaboration between Cornell University, in the United States, and Makerere University, in Uganda, with a mission of creating more inclusive and effective agricultural systems through a combination of: the development of a Center of Excellence for gender and agricultural research at Makerere University; intensive training courses for agricultural researchers working in sub-Saharan Africa; the creation of a gender and agricultural research Community of Practice; and supporting institutional transformation for targeted agricultural research institutions across sub-Saharan Africa. Details

 GREAT guides scientists to take new approaches to their research and to deliver equitable outcomes for all genders.

Nemedussa project

The Nemedussa project  aims to increase awareness and education of nematodes ensuring that plant-parasitic nematodes are managed correctly and beneficial nematodes can be implemented as biocontrol organisms.

These cause damage and yield loss to a wide variety of crops usually with other pathogens. Unfortunately, nematodes are often overlooked or misdiagnosed, resulting in the unnecessary use of unhealthy agro-chemicals. It was kick started in 2021-2024 Details

Agroforestry Paradox – Climate Clever Coffee (APCCO) Project

Agricultural Investors as Development Actors (AIDA)

AIDA examines the development outcomes of foreign agricultural investments at sub-national level for people living in and using land in their vicinity, using Danish agricultural investments and their location in Tanzania and Uganda as the case and geographical starting point. In particular, AIDA focuses on the development outcomes with respect to employment, land tenure security and water security. Details
