Principal echoes the message of Love, Forgiveness, Unity and Reconciliation

Thirteen (13) retirees from the Makerere University College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) were on 13th December, 2019 presented with the CAES Service Award in honor of their dedicated service to the university.

The awardees comprised the academic and non-academic staff at different ranks who had served the college in different capacities.

Prof. James Okot-Okumu was appreciated for his distinguished Leadership and Management Service as Head, Department of Environmental Management.

Mr. Obura Edward was also recognized for his distinguished Leadership and Management Service as College Registrar.

Dr. William Ekere, Dr. Robinah Ssonko Namirembe and Ms. Elizabeth Balirwa were appreciated for their distinguished services as Lecturers.

Mr. Siraje Mubiru and Mr. Wilson Mabonga were recognized for their distinguished services as drivers while Mr. James Nsamba, Mr. Ernest Tibaku-Zira, Mr. David Muhereza were appreciated for their dedicated services as Technicians.

Others recognized were Mr. Samuel Katongole (Artisan MUARIK), Ms. Robinah Musoke as Secretary to the Dean School of Agricultural Sciences and Mr. Aziz Dara as foreman MUARIK.

The function held at the School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Sciences’ gardens was presided over by the Principal CAES Prof. Bernard Bashaasha.

Prof. Bernard Bashaasha giving his remarks

The Principal thanked staff for accepting the invitation and spending the time together. He also thanked the registrars, Deans and Heads of departments for successfully conducting the examinations. He also welcomed the MUARIK community and friends of CAES to the party.

“I would also like to thank the instructors and people who examined. Many of you did the teaching and the examining and I am sure you have started on the grading because we have already set the date for the academic board.

I would also like to thank the administrative and support staff. Sometimes these offices you think you are managing them but if the Secretary says I am away today, then you discover you don not even know where the pen is. So everybody is appreciated, it is a symbiosis relationship in the college”, Prof. Bashaasha said.

The Principal reported that the college was doing well on the academic and research fronts with an increase in the number of publications of over 300 in the academic year 2018-2019.

The Principal, Deans and Awardees cut the cake during the examiners end of year party

He also said the college did well in terms of proposals seeking for the  Government Research Innovation funds. Out of 222 proposals that were awarded across the different Colleges and other units (MUBS inclusive) thirty (30) CAES staff proposals were considered for funding from the Government Research Innovation Fund (RIF) Round 1, No. 1, Financial Year 2019/2020.

He urged staff to keep working hard to maintain the good record and standard of the college.

“One message I would like to echo here, is the message of love, unity and reconciliation. It is a message that resonates very well with our being here to celebrate the end of examinations and end of year and the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ who emphasized the message of love.

As a college, we are diverse and this diversity is our strength. Personally I am happy, we are getting unified. CAES is for all of us. We will hand it over to the next generation to come. The year was tough at the beginning but it is our unity that kept us going. Let us love and  forgive each other, reconcile when there are differences, and when we have politics  others win and others loose”, Professor Bashaasha advised.

Other staff attending the party

Speaker after speaker hailed the Principal and the management for the culture of uniting staff in one forum and recognizing staff for their services to the university.

“This is a very good thing Mr. Principal. For us to come here and celebrate. Parties are very good because they bring out the other part of us besides academics. We appreciate because they make us meet. We can make it twice a year there is no problem. We do not have to wait for 365 days”, Dean School of Food Technology Nutrition and Bio Engineering Dr. Abel Atwukase remarked.

Every end of year, the CAES Management organizes the examiners/end of end of year party bringing together all staff in the college. The forum is also used to recognize staff for their dedicated service to the university.

In addition to getting together and recognizing staff, everyone is given a Christmas coupon worth Shs. 120,000 as a back home gift for the family and the CAES calendar. The college also publishes the Annual report documenting the years’ achievements in terms of Teaching and Learning; Research, Innovations and Technologies; Resource mobilization and collaborations; Outreach activities; and the Support environment.
