First Year students admitted to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), Makerere University have been cautioned to focus on their studies and to avoid engaging in activities that may lead to their dismissal.

Speaking at the College orientation meeting held on 19th October 2022, the representative of the Principal, also Dean, School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Prof. Fred Babweteera urged the students to attend class as expected and abide by all University policies. “This is a free society and no one is going to force you into class. It is up to you to focus straight away if you are to attain good grades. Every test counts. It is easier to maintain a good CGPA than to try to improve low grades,” he noted, cautioning the students against getting excited about the freedom at the University. He advised the students make use of the programme coordinators as their first point of contact in case of any challenge. He warned against indiscipline and urged them to take care of their personal wellness.

Representing the Deputy Principal, Prof. Abel Atukwase, Dean, School of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bio-engineering urged the students to work hard to avoid consequences of poor performance. He also advised them to network as much as possible in a bid to tap into various opportunities.

On behalf of the Deans, Dr John Baptist Tumuhairwe, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences briefed the students on the programmes in the College as well as the grading system and cautioned them against malpractice. “Tap into the available support systems to achieve your academic ambitions. We are here to support you to excel in your studies. Do not cheat your way through the University.”

During the meeting, the College Registrar, Ms. Jofrina Kyohairwe briefed the students on various policies regarding registration, tuition payment, withdrawal from a programme, change of programme, examinations and irregularities.

Mr. Albert Muhumuza, Systems Administrator, School of Agricultural Sciences, CAES briefed students on the various ICT support services at the College including the portals for online registration, generation of reference numbers for fees payment, creation of university email, and access to MUELE – the Makerere University E-Learning platform.

The students were also briefed on the different associations at the College and University and the academic social support services available at the Directorate of Gender Mainstreaming and the Counselling and Guidance Centre.
