PhD scholarship to study the Concept of Inclusive Engagement in Energy Transitions in East Africa: Gender, Participation, and Justice Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in collaboration with Technical University of Kenya (TUK), University of Juba (UOJ), University of Stavanger, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), and Makerere University received a grant from NORAD under NORHED II projects to implement activities for Project QZA-21/0159 – Programme 2021-2026 entitled “Capacity building for socially just and sustainable energy transitions in East Africa”. This project aims at building the capacity of the workforce within the East African region to implement a just and sustainable low-carbon energy agenda by imparting the relevant skills and knowledge through education, research, and outreach.
To this end, this project is now inviting suitable candidates among Technical University of Kenya and University of Juba staff to submit applications for a PhD scholarship to study the interlinkages of gender, justice, and participation in the journey towards achieving a sustainable and socially inclusive energy transition in East Africa. This PhD is tenable at the Technical University of Kenya for a period of 3 years.
The scholarship will cover tuition, research costs, and monthly stipend for the three years. About the PhD scholarship: Transitions to a low-carbon society are technical, economical, and deeply socio-political. The socio-political nature of energy transitions is ingrained in the social and gender inequalities that if left unaddressed could exacerbate the vulnerability and exclusion of women and other marginalized groupsin the transition agenda. This PhD study will therefore be oriented towards the theme “Inclusive Engagement in Energy Transitions: Gender, Participation, and Justice”.
The successful candidate will research on social inclusion in energy transitions in East Africa from the dimensions of gender, energy justice, and/or citizen participation. The researcher can also explore the challenges and opportunities for women and other marginalized groups to actively participate in the transition. The PhD candidate should investigate how policies and policy actors can institute a participatory governance structure to foster a successful sustainable, just, and inclusive energy transition in the East African region.
Main tasks:
• The successful candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Global Developments and Public Policy at The Technical University of Kenya – Centre for Science, Technology, and Society Studies
• The student must complete the PhD program consisting of elective and mandatory courses and a major research component
• Collect and analyse data • Produce a PhD thesis, preferably based on 3-4 peer-reviewed articles published in key international journals
• Disseminate results in scholarly journals, policy brief, and at national and international venues
• Be an active participant in the day-to-day project activities at the Centre for Science, Technology, and Society Studies.
Application Requirements:
Applicants should submit the following documents:
• Cover letter/motivation letter indicating the applicant’s interest in researching on gender, energy justice, citizen participation, and/or social inclusion in the energy transition
• Updated Curriculum Vitae
• Certified copies of the undergraduate and Masters degree certificate and transcripts. These should have a certified English translation if not already in English
• Official explanation of the grading system if qualifications were obtained from Outside Kenyan Universities
• Two recommendation letters from academic referees • A maximum of two-page doctoral study concept note, relevant to the research project. The concept should include a proposed title, background, problem statement, objectives, and indicative methodology relevant to this call.

Preferred selection criteria:
• Knowledge of social scientific studies of energy, gender, and social inclusion
• Experience with the use of qualitative social science research methods • Strong analytical and writing skills
• Minimum of 2 years teaching experience Assessment Process • After the submission deadline, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted
• The applications will undergo a review by the Project Coordinators in TUK, UOJ, and NTNU. This will be followed by interviews.
• The interviewing panel reserves the right to not consider materials received after the deadline and to consider only such applications that fulfil the requirements mentioned above
• Successful candidates will be notified by 1 st August 2024.
