President Museveni launches Makerere@90 years celebrations
The President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Museveni on Saturday August 4, 2012 launched the beginning of the one year celebrations to mark 90 years of Makerere University’s existence. Makerere University was founded in 1922.
The celebrations were marked by hoisting the ‘Mak@90’ flag at Makerere University Main gate, now standing alongside the Makerere University flag, the National flag and the East African flag.
After hoisting the flag, the President proceeded to officially open the New Library Extension, at the Makerere University Main Library.

The President was later walked through various exhibitions mounted by different Colleges of Makerere University at the Freedom Square. Ag. Principal CAES Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa and his Deputy Prof. Frank Kansiime received the President at CAES stalls and moved the Head of state around different technologies.

The School of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bio engineering showcased different technologies including the newly acquire Mobile fruit processor that was stationed in the freedom square and various value added products.
The School of Agricultural sciences exhibited various animal and crop production technologies including the Organic piggery (IMO Technology), Artificial Insemination technology in pigs, Haylage and Silage Making, Manure compost making, The milk booster, The weaners feed, the Soil Testing Kit, The Bio-Fertilizer (Rhizobia), Integrated ICT in agriculture as an extension service, Four varieties of Mak soy and the Banana Tissue Culture. Retired Professor Elly Sabiiti exhibited his newly published agricultural books for secondary and tertiary institutions (2010) edition and gave three copies as gift to the President.

The School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical sciences exhibited various forestry products including the Mycorhiza, Shear butter products, HIV/AIDS Medicinal plant Seedlings among others.
The president later laid four foundation stones for the construction of more laboratories and lecture rooms at proposed sites in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), another stone for the College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS), that of Food Technology and Business Incubation Centre (FTBIC), and a multi-disciplinary research laboratory complex at the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS) before addressing the congregation.

In his speech the President:
- Congratulated Makerere University for producing the human capital for Uganda,
- Urged scientists to develop Science and Technology as a cradle for transformation,
- Promised to work on a low interest revolving fund for student’s innovations and start up capital and,
- Acknowledged low renumeration for lecturers and appealed to them to be patient and not run away from their people saying, they will be rewarded at the right time.
