MAK-CAES in the process of partnering with NAADS to support the implementation of Government’s Agricultural Transformation Program

The Government of the Republic of Uganda, through the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding with Makerere University, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (MAK-CAES) to pursue its broad agricultural development objectives of diversifying and modernising agricultural production, and enhancing agro processing, marketing and exports, to achieve self-sufficiency in food and improve the well-being of the rural population, and being cognizant that agriculture is the backbone of the National economy.                  

                                                                                              

 A planning  meeting attended by officials from the NAADS Secretariat and CAES Staff The two parties are to cooperate and work together to achieve faster and effective delivery of services to the farmers, and this arrangement is to leverage on Makerere University, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (MAK-CAES)’s capacity and capability to provide quality training, research and community outreach programs in animal and crop/tree production, extension and innovation, agribusiness management, natural resource management, geography and geo-informatics, postharvest handling, processing and value addition with a view of increasing agriculture production and productivity as well as improving market access and value addition for agricultural products to ensure food security and farmers’ incomes in Uganda’s rural areas MAK-CAES is to make available its expert staff and students to support in the implementation of the agreed program activities, avail the Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute, Kabanyolo (MUARIK) for demonstrations of the different Agricultural Technologies and as training grounds, participate in the production and supply quality breeders’ seed and host the nucleus tree seedling nursery, partner with NAADS in identification and supply of selected quality planting and stocking materials, avail the Food Technology and Business Incubation Centre (FTBIC) to support and demonstrate food processing technologies for food value addition by the farmers and the private sector, avail the Continuing Agricultural Education Centre (CAEC) of MAK-CAES to be refurbished and equipped to host the collaboration's Rapid Response Centre, collaborate with NAADS in the selection and evaluation of new value chains to be introduced to farmers, facilitate the training of trainers and demonstration of postharvest technologies, conduct training and re-orientation of staff (from MAAIF, NAADS and the district Local Government) who will implement activities of this agricultural transformation program, develop, multiply and distribute educational and communication materials, participate in social marketing activities aimed at improving the extension services and farmers’ mind-set change, provide technical advice, develop guidelines, and carry out extension on the selected value chains / enterprises, and advise on nationwide availability of quality planting material, among others. Similarly, NAADS is to make available its expert staff to participate in the implementation of the agreed program activities and processes, contribute to the financial resources needed to undertake the activities agreed upon in this MOU and participate in other fund raising efforts as may be needed from time to time, manage the procurement and distribution of quality planting and breeding materials, collaborate with CAES in the selection and evaluation of new value chains to be introduced to farmers, and assist in identification and mobilisation of functional farmer and trader groups, among other roles.
