CAES Holds Freshers’ Orientation

A section of the first years being oriented at the college premises

Over 500 Undergraduate students on 15th August 2017 converged at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Biology Laboratory to take part in the college based orientation.

Members of staff including management and administrative staff addressed students on number aspects including academics, discipline, security, finance management, health among others.

Every academic  year, first year  students are oriented first at the university level then college, and departmental level on university policies, general conducts and dos and don’ts of the university.

Speaker after speaker welcomed students to the CAES describing it as the best science college in the university which they should be proud of.

Students were informed about the university process, requirement and rules for   registration as a key requirement for recognition in the university, fees payment, library access, pass mark and penalties for non compliance with the academic conduct which includes suspension and dismissal from the university.

The first years were also cautioned against anti social behavior including theft, drunkardness, fighting, exchange of sex for marks, involvement in strikes, disrespect of fellow students basing on backgrounds, faking documents and bad company.

They were also advised to desist from changing courses without expert advice, follow the right channels in addressing their problems, always read notice boards, be mature and responsible, be innovative and have the self drive to read on their own.

On a special note the Deputy Principal Assoc. Prof. Gorettie Nabanoga congratulated the female students for having been admitted in a science based college CAES on merit given the fact that many female students drop out of school.

“In the past women were considered to always be lagging behind but for you, you are special. Don’t lead to the downfall of CAES. You should be knowledgeable about the university policies.

Don’t lead yourself to actions that will put you in trouble. Don’t think you will fall in love with lecturers to award you marks but work hard to progress in your careers”, she advised

The college Principal, Prof. Bernard Bashaasha inspired the students to love their college and their profession.

He told them that CAES is a beautiful and one of the largest colleges in the university in terms of varieties, opportunities and degree of multi-disciplinarily bringing together food scientists, environmentalist, agriculturalists, geographers and foresters among others.

“You have chosen the right profession. You have to remember that 70% of the population derives their livelihood from agriculture. Agriculture is the main sector which drives the economy in terms of employment, Agricultural export and industrialization. It therefore gives you an opportunity to give back to the community,” said Bashaasha.

The Principal implored students to take part in the university leadership as this provides them added skills in management and to compete in the job market.

‘” Makerere is the only university where there are so many presidents and one can easily become a president in students leadership positions and associations to front students concerns”,  He said.

Prof. Bashaasha also reminded students to embrace religion and places of worship located with the University so that their stay at university is blessed.
