Graduate studies opportunity: M.Sc. student in Uganda under COMPRO project Background

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for a Master Fellowship under the project, “Institutionalization of quality assurance mechanism and dissemination of top quality commercial products to increase crop yields and improve food security of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa – COMPRO-II.”. However, priority will be given to Uganda citizens. The research fellow will particularly contribute to improving product formulation i.e. evaluation of native strains and compare their effectiveness to strains found in commercial product of interest.

He/she will participate in laboratory, glasshouse and field screenings of selected commercially-available products.

More specifically, he/she will:

1)       perform laboratory testing and characterization of commercial products, particularly microbiological products (e.g.Rhizobium, Trichorderma, Bacillus);

2)       conduct greenhouse screening (i.e. effectiveness testing) of commercial products which meet the quality control based on the laboratory testing (i.e. analysis in item 1);

3)       Determine the presence of native microorganism strains similar/identical to those in the commercial products;

4)       compare the effectiveness of native strains to that of strains in the product formulation;

5)       develop recommendations intended to improve the formulation of commercial products.

Essential requirements

  • The candidate should have a bachelor degree in agronomy or soil science (not less than 2nd Class) with good working knowledge of soil fertility related tools and approaches
  • The candidate and his/her referees should demonstrate that he/she is among the top 10% of their respective classes at university.
    • Proficiency in use of computers, internet-based tools and communication skills
      • Fluency in oral and written English

General information

The Position is for a maximum of two years. The person will be paid a monthly stipend, and applicable allowances as per IITA standards. The M.Sc. student will be based at Makerere University (MU), Kampala, Uganda.

Closing Date

The deadline for application to IITA is September 28th, 2012. Thereafter, the selected candidates by IITA will have to send their application (including all the information required by the university) for enrollment to MU.
