Makerere in Multi Field Trials for More New Soybean Varieties

Makerere University College of Agricultural Sciences is conducting multi field trials to scale up the production of new soya bean varieties with multiple attributes. Over 500 materials are in six multi-trial locations. Speaking to journalists during Makerere University media week on 16 the December 2011, Assistant researcher Soya breeding Programme Tonny Obua identified the trial locations as Kabanyolo and Namulonge for central Uganda: Jinja and Budaka (East), Ngeta - Lira (North).

Soil Testing Kit and Bio Fertilizer Technologies Developed

Makerere University College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (MUCAES) has succeeded in assembling some testing reagents that can evaluate soil nutrients. The college has also developed a Nitrogen Bio- fertilizer to boost production of leguminous crops in Uganda and the region. Peter Ssenyonga, a technician Department of Agricultural Production told participants during the Media Week that with a well established Biological Nitrogen Fixation Laboratory (BNF), the department has developed a Soil Testing Kit and a Bio - fertilizer to contribute towards solving the problem of food insecurity
