The Horticulture Newsletter launched

Makerere University Horticulture Students Association (MUHOSA) has launched a News letter dubbed, “The Horticulture Newsletter.” after   three years of its existence following MUHOSA formation in August 2010. This was in line with MUHOSA‘s objectives of creating awareness about Horticulture in the University as a way of contributing to the development of the horticulture sector of the country.

The launch which took place on 27th February, 2013 in conference room  School of Agricultural Sciences was attended by the  School Dean Dr. Denis Mpairwe  as the Guest honor, the association Patron Dr. Robinah Nsonko , Dr. Richard  Miiro and the college student president  Stanlus Okurut among others .

In  his speech, Dr.  Denis Mpairwe hailed the horticulture students under the association of Makerere University Horticulture Students Association (MUHOSA) for coming up with  a magazine describing it as important for  Academic and social values.

“The same publication could be used to advocate for other good social values in the University which are currently being under looked. I promised that the College will cater for all the financial requirements of the next publication but it should be published once every semester,” He said.

The Patron MUHOSA Dr. Robinah Ssonko expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the  association members and its leadership for the job well done. She described the successful launch of the newsletter as a challenge to the incoming leaders who must ensure that it is sustained and marketed.

Dr. Richard Miiro from the Department of Extensions and Innovation studies appreciated the appearance and content of the Newsletter and advised on the current and future publications. “Having information is good, but identifying the target audience and delivering the audience requirements is the very essential”, Dr. Miiro added.

The college student  president Stanslus Okurut also advised association members to look beyond  the  good appearance  and always ensure that the content s are of  good quality.

MUHOSA association president Henry Ssendagire thanked members for   the commitment and contribution offered towards the publication. He       also thanked the college for giving the platform for students’ associations and the patron for the financial support.

The Horticulture Newsletter, is the first MUHOSA publication after the association Patron Dr. Robinah Namirembe  Ssonkko advocated for a publication  to inform  the public  about horticulture that will be published once every semester .The copies of the first publication are on sale.

The newsletter comes after the realization that students admitted to do Horticulture were not fully aware about the course and therefore aims at   helping   new entrants and those in High school to make informed choices of offering the course at the University.

The Magazine will cover issues in the horticulture sector and provide information from the different horticulture units, follow up the destinations of the graduates from the course, new developments and technologies in the sector.
