Welcome to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Makerere University. Choosing an agricultural or environment related career is a non-regrettable decision in ones life. Pursuing an agricultural or environment related degree opens up several future career opportunities. As Uganda and the surrounding countries seek for economic transformation, the need for well trained agricultural and environmental professions is more urgent than ever before. There is no doubt that agriculture will continue to be the backbone and engine of our countries economic development.
Dedicated to Makerere University''s motto, (We Build for the Future) the college takes a hands-on, engaging approach to education, preparing students to be leaders in their fields and communities. The college operates a flexible curriculum with many elective courses to meet individual student interests. The college offers both undergraduate and postgraduate training. Currently there 14 undergraduate, 16 masters, 8 PhD degree and 5 Diploma programs in the broad areas of Agriculture, forestry and environmental sciences including Agricultural Biotechnology, Horticulture, Land Use and Management, Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Rural Innovation, Food Science and Technology, Agribusiness Management, Tourism, Environmental Management. Applied Nutrition, Animal Science, Crop Science, Soil Science, Forestry, meteorology and Climate Change Science. The programs are designed to provide all-round training, including Orientation Seminars, lectures, in-semester practicals, field attachments for skills development and enhancement, and a recess term dedicated to practical training.
To the environmentalists, and geographers the college curricula offer them opportunities to traverse Uganda and visit a variety of ecosystems ranging from the semi-deciduous tropical rainforests in Budongo to the vast Savanna ecosystems with beautiful animals in Queen Elizabeth National Park. While for the agriculturists, they are introduced to the different agro-ecologies through well-organized field trips. Students'' presentation and scientific writing skills are enhanced through individual research projects undertaken by students and seminars. These qualities are enhanced by the hands-on training in computer skills.
Through strong field based research programmes backed by laboratory experiments, the College generates technology and innovations for improving agriculture, forestry within the context of a sustainable environment. The College conducts outreach activities to disseminate the solutions beyond the University. The Continuing Agricultural Education Centre and the Makerere University use responsive and proactive strategies to conduct non-degree training to strengthen capacities of practitioners in various agricultural and environmental disciplines. What makes the College unique is the fact that all research programs are linked to graduate training. Hence are able to provide well-trained Human Resources and well researched Technologies at
the same time. Consequently the College is. one of the leading units in terms of research out put in the East African Region.
The college is well endowed with 189 lecturers who are passionate about teaching and research.The college encourages a collegial and conducive environment to nurture excellent researchers and students. This is manifested through a close working relationship between students and staff; a bureaucracy free environment; an innovative curriculum that provides the intellectual depth and essential skills; accessible staff who mentor students in and out of the lecture room; an interesting and diverse student body of over 3600. We conduct outreach activities to disseminate the solutions beyond the Makerere University campus. The goal of the College is to " Develop Intellectual capacity of students/scientists and equip them with the knowledge, practical skills and attitudes to positively influence sustainable agricultural development, nature conservation and judicious utilization of environmental resources ".
